Keeping the Southwest Louisiana community informed about industrial growth is one aspect of our purpose.

CAER
Sirens are located throughout Lake Charles, Westlake, and Sulphur to alert citizens of incidents at local plants, highway mishaps and rail incidents that may have offsite impact in the community. The system, known as the Community Awareness Emergency Response group, or CAER, was put in place in the 1990s.
The system is checked regularly to ensure the sirens are in working order and in good condition. The check normally occurs at noon each Monday. Residents hear a brief siren during the system check.
If the sirens are activated at any other time, residents are advised to shelter in place. The steps for a shelter in place are:
- Go inside
- Turn off your air conditioning or heating system
- Close windows
- Check the media for additional information
CAER is linked to the CalcaShout Emergency Alert System housed in the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness through the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury. CalcaShout is an emergency alert system that also include notifications of severe weather alerts, floods, fires and other emergencies.
