Lake Area Industry Alliance

Chem Expo

The largest hands-on, one-day expo in the nation occurs in Southwest Louisiana each year. This LAIA program is known as Chem Expo. It began in 1999 with the purpose of bringing sixth-graders from area schools together to showcase science in action. More than 2,700 students in Southwest Louisiana participate each year with over 650 volunteers from LAIA member companies, McNeese State University in Lake Charles and area high school chemistry classes.

During Chem Expo, students move through various interactive stations where they see science and chemistry applied in everyday household products that are manufactured by LAIA member companies. These products include ingredients used to make athletic shoes, medications, detergents, lip balm, plastic bowls and cups and many other everyday items.

The students also learn that products from industry are used throughout the healthcare field. Vinyl is produced by LAIA member companies and used extensively for IV tubing, syringes, bags for blood donation and heart catheters. Even contact lens cleaners, eye drops and other pharmaceuticals contain products produced by LAIA member companies.

Chem Expo is held during National Chemistry Week each year, usually in the fall and was recognized nationally with the American Chemical Society Phoenix Award for greatest industrial involvement and the ACS Chem Luminary Award for greatest reach of a target audience.
